The screenshot arrives at 09:41: a Nifty or Bank Nifty options blotter, a circled candle, a caption that implies the author saw it coming. Your own morning, if you have a job, was a stand-up and a half-watched five-minute chart. Comparison starts as information and ends as a verdict on your identity. The verdict is almost always invalid, because the two objects are not the same class of evidence.
A screenshot is a finished story with a chosen frame. A practice log is a sequence of decisions made before the next candle was known. Treat them as interchangeable and you will practise someone else’s highlight reel.
Two information diets
| Screenshot diet (Telegram / YouTube / “calls”) | Ledger diet (your replay log) | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of evidence | One cropped outcome | One tagged enter / skip / manage |
| Time | After the move, or after the P&L | At decision time, date hidden if you did the work |
| Selection | Wins travel; process-0s rarely do | Every row, including empty sessions |
| Your job | Feel behind, or copy the costume | Count your tags |
| Typical Indian failure | Chasing the index name you saw in a room | Logging only the clicks that felt clever |
Neither diet is morally superior in the abstract. Live markets produce public information; people will post. The decision is which diet you allow to change today’s rules. Ego practice already treats highlight reels as identity poison. This piece is the comparison mechanic: when looking sideways is data, and when it is a tax.
Index screenshots are a special trap. Practising “what Nifty did” from someone else’s crop is not the same as practising index ideas without becoming tip culture. The crop hides the session, the product, the size, and every skip.
Decision criteria: data vs theatre
Before you let a post change your next sitting, run four yes/no checks. All four must be yes, or the comparison is theatre. Log the result as comparison_class: data | theatre.
- Same product? Cash intraday, delivery, and index options are not one ladder. A screenshot of a weekly option payoff does not grade your 15-minute pullback rules.
- Same decision point? Can you say what was known before their entry? If the chart is finished, you are comparing your uncertainty to their hindsight.
- Same sample language? Do they show skips, cap hits, and losing days, or only the circled winner? Incomplete samples cannot be used as a benchmark.
- Would it change a written field? If the post would make you add a setup, widen a window, or lift a cap today, it is not research. It is rule churn. Research waits for the weekly review.
If check 2 fails — and it usually does — you may still watch the video as entertainment. You may not copy the trade, and you may not rewrite the Identity Claim Card mid-week. Trading videos do not replace practice for the same reason: demonstration is not a hidden-date decision.
When you actually want to compare methods, compare your own A-week against your own B-week on randomised NSE replay, as in comparing setups through practice. Other people are not a control group. They did not run your rules on your sitting clock.
The Comparison Tax
Count it. If you do not count it, comparison will eat the sitting and call itself “market awareness.”
Daily fields (two minutes):
screenshot_minutes— time on rooms, channels, and “just checking how the street is positioned”logged_decisions— committed enter / skip / manage rowsrule_edits_after_post— 0 or 1comparison_urge—behind/copy/prove/none
Comparison Tax for the week = hours on screenshots ÷ hours on logged replay. You do not need a “correct” ratio. You need the number. A week with two hours of Telegram and twenty logged decisions is a different week from two hours of Telegram and two decisions. The first is a noisy commute. The second is the job.
Also count borrowed-setup clicks: entries whose setup_tag was not on Friday’s frozen list. Those are comparison made flesh. Tag borrowed. Do not argue with the tag because the sim printed green.
Indian session note: 09:15–09:45 is when rooms get loudest, because the open is loud. If you cannot protect that window, do not spend it half-watching other people’s fills. Evening replay on hidden dates exists precisely so the open can be practised without the chorus.
What to do with the screenshot anyway
You do not have to delete every channel. You have to quarantine it.
Allowed use (after the sitting, never during): one screenshot, one sentence in the journal: “What claim would I have to add to test this honestly?” If you cannot name a testable claim, the screenshot was a feeling. File it under theatre and stop.
Forbidden use: changing today’s cap because someone “caught the drive”; adding Bank Nifty because the room is on Bank Nifty; judging your process-2 skip against their cropped winner.
Replay Trader’s useful contrast is structural, not moral: randomised historical starting points, hidden dates, candle-by-candle reveal. Nobody in the room can crop your next bar for you. ₹999 for 30 days is a finite block to grow a ledger, not a promise that the ledger will outshine anyone’s feed.
Failure modes
- Anonymous benchmarking. You compare your behind-the-scenes to their stage. Unbeatable by design.
- Product laundering. You copy frequency from index options into cash equity practice. The log becomes unreadable.
- Envy sizing. You lift hypothetical size because their rupee font was large. Size is a frozen 1R question, not a social one.
- Silence as shame. You stop logging on the week you scrolled most. The tax becomes invisible, which is how it wins.
If the week’s Comparison Tax is high and logged_decisions is low, the fix is not motivational. Cut the rooms during the sitting. Restore the decision budget. Review process metrics on your rows only.
