Inside Bar Breakouts: How to Practise Them

Replay Trader Editorial Team

Educational content for Indian traders on deliberate practice, chart replay, and setup discovery. Not investment advice.

An inside bar — current candle's range contained within the prior candle's range — signals compression. Traders watch for expansion: a break of the mother bar's high or low. On NSE intraday charts, inside bars appear constantly in midday chop. Most breakouts fail or move inches.

Inside bar breakout practice treats compression → expansion as a tagged decision theme, not a automatic entry signal.

Mechanical inside bar definition

Write it tight:

  • Mother bar: reference candle (range high/low defined).
  • Inside bar: high ≤ mother high AND low ≥ mother low (strict containment).
  • Multi-inside chains: do you trade first inside only or require N inside bars? Freeze N.
  • Break trigger: touch, close, or two closes beyond mother extreme?
  • Direction filter: both sides, or only with trend tag?

Ambiguous definitions produce ambiguous practice logs.

Compression → expansion narrative (without hype)

Compression: range contracts; participants wait.

Expansion: price exits the box; you decide if the exit is your trade.

The practice skill is not "spot inside bars." It is deciding which compressions deserve attention at your pre-marked levels and session segments — and skipping the rest.

Strengths of inside-bar drills

  • Clear mother-bar boundaries for triggers and stops.
  • Excellent skip training — most inside bars never break cleanly.
  • Teaches patience through multiple inside bars in a chain.
  • Pairs with range and breakout practice — shared expansion DNA.

Failure modes

Failure Description Tag
False break Breaks mother bar, reverses inside ib_false_break
Mid-range inside Compression far from level ib_no_context
Chain overload Endless inside bars; late chase ib_late
Open noise First hour inside bars on gaps ib_open_noise
Stop inside mother Risk model incoherent on wide mother ib_wide_mother

False breaks are a feature frequency for inside bars — log them, do not moralise.

Mother bar width filter

Add a rule: if mother bar range exceeds your maximum stop width, auto-skip ib_wide_mother. Inside bar practice often discovers your stop model cannot fit NSE midday noise without this filter.

The inside-bar practice block

Setup: 5-min NSE chart, random hidden dates, liquid symbol.

Before replay:

  1. Location rule: inside bar only at range edge, trend pullback zone, or ORB boundary — pick one.
  2. Break trigger and invalidation frozen.
  3. Session segment tag for block (midday recommended for first block).

During replay (target 20 decisions):

  1. Identify inside bar Y/N at each relevant candle.
  2. If Y and location pass: wait for break trigger window (define max bars to wait).
  3. At break: enter / skip / tag ib_false_break if already failed by rules.
  4. Log: chain length, location tag, decision, process score.

Inside bar vs engulfing — separate tags

Engulfing is expansion candle dominance; inside bar is pre-expansion compression. Do not merge logs in one session — compare in separate weeks via candlestick patterns without hindsight.

NSE midday laboratory

11:30–13:00 often produces inside bars in balance. That is good for skip practice and bad for fantasy win rates. Tag midday_ib. Compare to open segment in a later block — behaviour differs.

Waiting window after inside bar

Define max bars you will wait for a break after inside bar forms. Example: six bars on 5-min chart, then tag ib_expired and stop watching that compression. Unlimited waits turn into ib_late chases when break finally arrives extended.

Coiling clusters

Multiple inside bars in a row (coiling) are not automatically stronger — often they are midday noise. Tag chain_length in logs. Review whether chains ≥ 3 correlate with cleaner breaks for your rules or with more false breaks. Let data kill folklore.

Trend filter experiment

Run two holdout blocks:

  • Block 1: break both directions allowed.
  • Block 2: only breaks with trend tag.

Compare ib_false_break rates and process scores — not P&L. One filter usually fits your temperament better.

Stop placement relative to mother bar

Write stop rule before block: beyond opposite mother extreme, beyond inside bar, or ATR-based — pick one. ib_wide_mother often pairs with stops that exceed your daily risk template; auto-skip those mothers instead of shrinking stops mid-trade without a written rule.

Break + retest variant

Some traders enter on retest of broken mother bar rather than first break. If you use this, tag ib_retest separately from ib_break — different failure modes. Do not switch between them mid-session.

Holdout after rule edit

When you tighten mother-bar width or add a trend filter after review, run ten fresh hidden sessions before any second edit. Inside-bar rules tempt endless tweaking because compression patterns look different every day. Holdout discipline prevents hand-tuned rules that only fit remembered charts.

Practise compression on unseen bars

Inside bars are effortless to circle after the break. The practice is sitting on the mother bar not knowing which way expansion goes — then committing.

Hidden-date replay on NSE history is how inside bar rules become decision data instead of chart decoration.

One honest month of inside-bar practice usually teaches humility first: valid compressions are abundant, clean breaks are not. That is useful. You learn whether your temperament suits waiting on boxes or prefers open-drive setups like ORB. Let tags answer that — not one memorable breakout screenshot.

Replay Trader is designed for that bar-by-bar loop — setup discovery through compression reps, not breakout guarantees.
