Volatility Contraction: Reading the Quiet Before a Move

Replay Trader Editorial Team

Educational content for Indian traders on deliberate practice, chart replay, and setup discovery. Not investment advice.

Quiet is not a signal. Quiet is a hypothesis that the next expansion will be tradable — and hypotheses need invalidation.

On finished charts, contraction always "preceded the move." Of course it did: you selected the charts where a move arrived. On a hidden-date NSE replay, quiet is mostly lunch, a dead large-cap, or a coil that expands one bar and dies.

Treat contraction as a box you are willing to abandon.

What you are allowed to call contraction

Write a mechanical definition before the session. Three families are enough; pick one per block.

Range shrink: the last N bars' high-low is smaller than the previous N. Freeze N. Do not eyeball "getting tight."

Inside structure: one or more inside bars against a mother bar. Already a protocol of its own — do not mix definitions mid-week.

Opening-range coil: after 09:15, the first 15–30 minutes form a box, then subsequent bars stay inside it. This is not the same as an opening-range breakout entry. It is a claim that the box is still a box.

If you cannot say when the quiet stopped being quiet, you do not have contraction. You have a lull.

The Quiet-Box checklist (use as a gate, not a vibe)

Print this. Tick it at the moment you would otherwise "get ready."

  • Box boundaries are prices, not feelings (high and low of the defined window).
  • Minimum bars inside the box have printed (your N).
  • Width is tradeable after a hypothetical stop beyond the opposite side — if the box is a few ticks, skip as noise_box.
  • Session segment is tagged (open_coil / midday_coil / late_coil).
  • Expansion trigger is written: close outside, or two closes, or a full bar beyond.
  • Invalidation is written: time without expansion, or a false expansion back inside, or a box rewrite (you moved a boundary).
  • You know whether you are practising break of box or fade failed break — one, not both.

If any line is unchecked, you do not have a Quiet-Box. You have a hope that something will happen because nothing is happening.

Failure modes (tag these while the box still exists)

Tag What you did Why it is a failure
box_rewrite Nudged high/low so price still "counts as inside" Hypothesis died; you kept the label
quiet_equals_entry Bought the middle because it was calm Contraction is not location
any_break Entered on a wick through the box Trigger was a close; you cheated
wrong_segment Midday coil treated like opening drive Same geometry, different session physics
never_invalidated Sat through 40 bars of quiet Time stop was missing or ignored
expansion_chase Missed the trigger, chased the third bar out Different setup; log as skip-fail
volume_story "Low volume coil must explode" No measured volume rule, just folklore

Volume confirmation can sit in a later block if you define it. It cannot rescue an undefined box.

Workflow: hypothesis, then one expansion

Step 1 — Form the box in the past tense. The box exists only after N bars. You may not trade bar 2 of a "forming coil."

Step 2 — State the bet in one sentence. Example: "Close above box high, stop below box low, time stop 6 bars." Opposite direction is a separate sentence, not an implied both-ways ATM.

Step 3 — Advance one candle at a time. At each close: still valid / triggered / invalidated.

Step 4 — After trigger, you are no longer in a contraction trade. You are in a breakout or failed-break trade. Hand the rest of the session to that rule set — for example a break versus retest rule — or stand aside. Do not keep "managing the coil."

Step 5 — Log the invalidation even when you skipped. Skips that would have been never_invalidated are data. Quiet that never pays is the point of the drill.

Twenty box-decisions is enough for one definition. Switching from inside-bars to opening-range coils inside the same twenty makes the log decorative.

NSE quiet is often just the session

Indian cash hours are 09:15 to 15:30. A large stretch of that window is routinely slower than the open. If your N is small, you will "find" contraction every day at 12:15. That is not a volatility-contraction pattern. That is lunch.

So add a relative clause to the checklist: contraction versus the same session's opening activity, or versus the prior N bars, not versus a memory of a Nifty trend day you liked.

Late coils into 15:00 have little room to expand inside the cash session. If you practise them, your time stop should be shorter, or you should treat them as "no-trade quiet" and log late_coil_skip. That skip is a valid contraction skill.

Do not practise coils on names you could not hypothetically leave. A perfect box on a thin stock is a drawing.

Original rule that keeps the hypothesis honest

One rewrite maximum, then death. If you adjust a box boundary once because a wick poked out and closed back in, you must also write what second poke does: invalidate. Traders who love coils tend to redraw until the expansion is inevitable. At that point you are labelling the move after it began.

If you cannot tolerate that death rule, contraction practice is not for you this month. Trade defined levels instead. Quiet is optional. Invalidation is not.

Limits

A Quiet-Box will not forecast direction. Compression can expand either way, or not at all. Practice is for seeing whether you wait for your trigger and honour your death rule — not for collecting coils that "worked."

It will not turn Mark Minervini's swing-trading VCP language into an intraday NSE system. If you study VCP ideas, keep them on daily/swing charts with their own rules. This article is about contraction as a session hypothesis.

Replay with randomised starts and hidden dates is how you meet quiet that does not resolve. Candle-by-candle reveal stops you from skipping to "the expansion." A 30-day, ₹999 block is a reasonable window to run one definition twenty times. It is not proof that trading coils is your work.

If the log is mostly never_invalidated and quiet_equals_entry, you were bored, not reading volatility.

Tick the Quiet-Box, then let the next NSE candle confirm or kill it. Join the waitlist.
